Rochdale to Torquay/Exeter


Friday 14th - Saturday 15th - Sunday 16th September 2007


Following this 1932 Route but to include Cheltenham

Friday 14th September 2007
Depart;  Rochdale Town Hall 7.45am
(To Civic send off by the Mayor of Rochdale)

Leave Rochdale Town Hall Square 7.45am and turn right into The Esplanade proceed straight ahead at roundabout and into South Par (which is for Buses and Taxis only but we have had clearance!) turn left into Constantine Road (and around the rear of the Bus Station) which changes into Baillie Street  then turn right into Milton Street and right again into Smith Street and past the former Yelloway Office building then turn left into Drake Street then follow A640 Milnrow Road – through Newbold and along Rochdale Road  to Milnrow. 

At traffic lights (with Eliz
abethan Way in front of you) turn left into Bridge Street, then follow the road to the right with the continuation becoming Dale Street, travel through Milnrow centre onto Newhey Road then back on A640 at Newhey. Follow A663 Shaw Road - Milnrow Road - Crompton Way to Shaw.

Then follow the B6194 Oldham Road - Heyside - Higginshaw – along Shaw Road until you go over railway bridge then turn right into Brook Street and follow until reaching the large roundabout  (with railway bridge above) at junction of A669 Lees Road. Proceed to the right at roundabout heading for (
Oldham Town Center) passing Lees Road and Oldham Way (the bypass) then turn left into The Mumps and pull into Bus Station on left. Stop here for 5 mins whilst photos are taken of coaches opposite the former Yelloway Booking Office. 

Turn left out of Bus Station into Yorkshire Street and almost immediately bear left and along Union Street to junction of A627 King Street . Turn left and follow signs for A62 Manchester. 

Travel along the A62 Manchester Road - Oldham Road - through Hollinwood - Failsworth - to the traffic lights junction of Swan Street and Great Ancoats Street at New Cross Manchester. Turn left into Great Ancoats Street then 3rd right into Newton Street

Follow Newton Street and straight across Piccadilly into
Portland Street, follow Portland Street to the traffic lights junction of Oxford Road. (which is the A34). Go straight across Oxford Road and into Chepstow Street (passing the rear of East Street Coach Station on the right where the Yelloway coaches departed for Torquay) and continue into Great Bridgewater Street. to the traffic light junction of Lower Mosley Street.. ('Britons Protection' pub on left hand corner!). Go straight ahead and under long railway arches to the traffic light junction of Deansgate

Turn left Here and follow
A56 Chester Road. Keep in middle lane and pass over the A57M then after approx ¼mile at Cornbrook there is a set of traffic lights with the new Bridgewater Way in front of you.  Bear left at these traffic lights and take the old A5014, which is still Chester Road, and follow to Trafford Bar where it changes to Talbot Road, follow until the junction with Chester Road at Gorse Hill then follow A56 through Sale to Altrincham. 

Leave Altrincham via A56 Dunham Road towards Chester. At junction of M56 take A556 Chester Road - at first set of traffic lights (Swan Hotel) turn left into A5034 Mereside Road and follow until the junction of A50 -  Turn left to Knutsford then A50 to Holmes Chapel - Church Lawton, then A34 to Newcastle-under-Lyme. 

*About three quarters of mile before Newcastle on the A34 Liverpool Road and opposite the Newcastle College, pull into the First Bus Garage (former PMT Bird-in-Hand Cafe and Yelloways first refreshment stop) where photos will be taken*

Proceed on A34 via Stone - Stafford (by pass) to Dunston then A449 Penkridge - Wolverhampton. 

*When approaching
Wolverhampton, on A449 Stafford Road, follow signs for Molineux Stadium and travel along Waterloo Road pass the football ground until you come to the Ring Road. Go straight ahead here, still Waterloo Road, across Darlington Street and into School Street then turn left into Salop Street then right into Worcester Street. At roundabout go straight ahead into A449 Penn Road *

Follow A449 - Kidderminster.
Worcester - Tewkesbury - Coombe Hill then A4019 to Cheltenham and St Margaret's Road Coach Station. 

Arrival at Cheltenham
approx. 1.30pm - Departure spot on 2pm

Via A40
Gloucester - A38 Bristol .

From
Cheltenham Coach Station turn right into North Place and Right at traffic lights into St Margaret’s Road which becomes Swindon Road. At traffic lights in front of modern red building, bear left into Poole Way and shortly after go right at next traffic lights into Tewkesbury Road. Pass under the railway bridge and then at traffic lights turn left into Gloucester Road.

Proceed ahead following signs to A40 and Gloucester. Join the A40 dual carriageway, passing GCHQ on the right. At roundabout take 3rd exit onto B4063, signposted Churchdown and Airport.

Follow B4063 passing under M5 continuing ahead through several sets of traffic lights. At roundabout with A40, take 4th exit to continue on the B4063 Cheltenham Road signposted Longlevens and University of Gloucestershire .

Continue, going ahead at roundabout, signposted City Centre, and bear right at traffic lights into London Road. Pass Stagecoach depot on right, pass under railway bridge and turn left at traffic lights into Bruton Way. Continue on dual carriageway past bus station set back on Right hand side and Gloucester railway station on the left.

After dual carriageway ends (you are now on Trier Way ) and with park on right hand side, continue ahead at traffic lights (signposted A4173 Stroud) into Park End Road (i.e. not bearing right for Bristol ). At traffic lights turn left into Stroud Road . Continue on passing a High School on the right hand side, go ahead across mini roundabout and over railway bridge to a large roundabout. Turn right into Southern Avenue (Bristol A38)

At major traffic light junction go straight ahead onto B4008 signposted Hardwicke and Quedgeley (NOT left on new dual carriageway) continue on B4008 across several roundabouts. Pass over dual carriageway and at large roundabout, with McDonalds and Services, turn right taking the Bristol, Stroud A38 exit which is a single carriageway road.

Continue on A38 through Whitminster, Cambridge, Berkley Heath, Newport, Stone, Falfield, and follow the A38 until traffic lights (with petrol station on the right hand side) at Alveston. Then right onto B4061 signposted Thornbury/Aust, (passing the Ship
Inn, in Alveston where the 1911 Yelloway coach stopped for the night!) then left after 100 yards onto B4461 towards Aust. After
1/4 mile this road takes a right turn at a crossroads. At Aust motorway junction turn left onto the A403 and follow this road along the coast towards Avonmouth.

At Avonmouth follow signs across two roundabouts for A4, Bristol.
There is a bus lane on some of this section, however it's not very wide and can suffer from overhanging trees. Then take B4461 to Aust then take the coast road to Avonmouth then onto the A4 toward Bristol.  

*If anybody wants a picture of their coach with the old Severn bridge in the background get into the outside lane of the dual carriageway after the motorway roundabout and take the first left to Aust Wharf/Old Passage (NOT Aust village) and follow this road for 1/4 mile. This then opens up to a wide road with plenty of parking and the bridge in the background. After this follow the same road, in the same direction, for 1/4 mile and turn right at the junction with the dual carriageway to rejoin the main route.

*If anybody wants a picture of their coach with the
Clifton Suspension Bridge in the background there are
a couple of parking areas on both sides of the road
across Bedminster Down, just after the hill.

After passing under the Clifton Suspension Bridge keep left  following signs for Bristol City
centre. Proceed along Hotwell Road passing the SS Great Britain and at the roundabout turn right into Anchor Road. At first set of Traffic Lights turn Right into Canons Way and into Millennium Square.

Saturday 15th September
Depart; Harbourside, Millenium Square,
Anchor Road, Bristol at 10am .
Proceed out of Millennium Square to traffic lights at junction of Anchor Road. Turn left and up to roundabout then bear left along Hotwell Road passing the SS Great Britain then follow signs for 'Bristol Airport' to take you through various parts of the Cumberland Basin road system, then past the site of Britstol Omnibus's Winterstoke Road depot (on the left soon after the VOSA vehicle testing station; now a Currys/McDonalds!) onto the A38 at Bedminster Down.

Follow A38 from here through Redhill - Churchill - East Brent - Highbridge - Bridgewater - Taunton - Wellington - then - Via B3181 (formerly A38) - Cullompton - Pinhoe - then via B3212 Pinhoe Road until it changes into Blackboy Road, at roundabout go straight ahead along Sidwell Street then take second left into Cheeke Street and right into Exeter Bus/Coach Station.

Arrive
Exeter Bus/Coach Station approx 1.30pm . Depart 2.30pm.
Via
A377 Alphington Road - Alphington - then follow A38 signs for Torquay/Plymouth then A380 Torquay.  At Sandygate on A380 take the A383 into Kingsteignton and on into Newton Abbot. Pass the railway station and follow signs for Torquay

*At Kennford where the A38 and A380 split and to avoid going up Telegraph Hill carry on on the A38 to Harcombe and take the B3344 to Chudleigh/Chudleigh Knighton then take the B3193 to Kingsteignton then on to Newton Abbot.
